National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) is from November 16-22, 2025.
Events and meetings are taking place across the country, bringing people together to understand addiction better and to develop tools and resources to fight it.
The theme for 2025 is Anchoring Hope.
A theme well suited to our maritime climate and the growing mental health challenges that are facing Nova Scotians and their fellow Atlantic Canadians.

Is addiction really on the rise in Canada?
The Canadian Substance Use Survey (CSUS), previously known as the Canadian Alcohol and Drugs Survey, is conducted every two years by Health Canada. It collects data on alcohol and drug use trends in Canada. This data is vital for creating effective strategies and programs to reduce substance use. Since 2008, the CSUS has provided essential national substance use information that helps us work toward better health outcomes.
Health Canada is improving access to mental health support, both online and in-person, leading to some decline in substance use. However, self-medication for mental health issues remains a concern. It’s crucial to find the right help during challenging times. Outpatient and virtual care options are becoming more popular, as they fit better with people’s schedules.
Searidge and Heritage Foundations offer outpatient programs for mental health and addiction issues. Learn more about our programs and how they can support you or someone you care about.
